10th ANNUAL INDIANA FALL CLASSIC 10K AND 1 MILE RUN/WALK

On Saturday Nov. 13, 1999, The 10th Annual Indiana Fall Classic 10K Race and 1 mile Fun Run/walk took place at Hawthorn Park. It was by far the best weather the race had ever experienced in its 10 year history. The fans were treated to some interesting races also. In the 10K Race, there was a breakaway pack of three runners, that jockeyed back and forth for leadership honors, with Nathan Peterson ( a Rose Hulman Student) finally claiming honors as the 1999 Champion over Lonnie Pilkington of Graham, Texas and Andreas Maher (a former champion himself from nearby West Terre Haute ). The next pack of 4 runners made for an interesting race themselves. The former record for masters runners on this course was a 38.27 held by Ron Shepard of Clinton set back in 1996. This group of 4 runners were all masters (40 and over) and all shattered the existing Masters record. It was a day the old guys came to play!! Danny Sexton of New Castle, Indiana finally broke down the other three to claim Masters championship in 37:03. His running buddy, also from New Castle, Tim Grant, finished in 37:33. Shaun Cooper, of Covington, was the third member of the group in 37:34 and Christopher Farrell of Poland, Indiana was fourth of the group in 37:41. The old guys still have it! Carla Yerkes of Covington, Indiana was the overall female champion for the fourth time in the ten year history in a time of 40:37, which was her best time on the course. The female Masters was won by Debbie Considine of Terre Haute in 56:57. A new category this year was Grand Masters, which won by Charles Kennedy of Champaign, IL in a time of 45:29 and Treva Beals of Oblong, Il. in a time of 1:07:58. The overall male champion in the 1 mile run was Caleb Achenbach of Terre Haute in a time of 7:14. The overall female Champion in the 1 mile run was Jill Edwardson of Danville, Il. in 7:40. The overall male Champion in the 1 mile walk was Mark Walker in a time of 10:52 and the female Champion was Penny Spinner of Paris, IL. in a time of 10:39.
